Some of the earliest prosthetic limbs were found to be used in Greek and Roman times. One of the earliest accounts we have received is that of Marcus Sergius. He was a general who lost his right hand in the second Punic War. An iron hand was created for him with the sole purpose of holding his shield. He was able to continue fighting with this prosthetic hand.
The oldest prosthetic limb ever found was a prosthetic toe, constructed out of wood and leather. It was found by researchers in Egypt, attached to the remains of an Egyptian noblewoman. This evidence is proof of how little prosthetic limbs have been changed throughout the years. Recent materials contained in prosthetics have been changed, but for the longest time only wood, metal, and leather attachments were used as prosthetic limbs. (Clements, n.d.).
