The Parts
The InterfaceThe part of the prosthetic that attaches to the residual limb is called the interface. The socket is one part of the interface, and it is made of plastic or laminated material. The socket attaches the components to the individual's residual limb. The frame is the other part of the interface and it is made of graphite or other like materials. The frame is what provides support for the person so that they are able to stand on their prosthetic, or put pressure on it.
In order to make the prosthetic fit tight, a liner is worn between the residual limb and the socket. Some individuals wear multiple liners in order to make the prosthetic fit tight and to make the prosthetic more cushioned. Some individuals choose to wear socks rather than a liner. Suction Valve: The suction valve is on the socket and keeps the prosthetics in its place. Liners with a locking pin: There is a pin that is attached to the end of the suction liner, which is used to lock into the bottom of the socket. (Schaffer, 2015). |
The ComponentsComponents: Components are virtually the replacements for the individual's bones. They are also the artificial fingers, hands, feet, toes, joints, wrists, hips, elbows, and knees.
A newer type of prosthetics are controlled myoelectrically. The prosthetics are able to move by using the electric charges that are sent off when a muscle contracts. Bionic components are the newest types of prosthetics. Many people desire prosthetics that move merely by thinking. The technology makes it so that the nerves that once controlled the amputated limb are connected to a healthy muscle in the individual's body. (Schaffer, 2015). |
The Cover
Certain individuals choose to wear a cover over their prosthetic. The cover is made of foam and is formed around the socket.
Their are a variety of different covers that people choose. A person can choose to buy a general cover or a cover that is customized specifically to them and their skin color. The covers can be designed to look just like a person's skin, making the prosthetic look more natural. (Schaffer, 2015). "Additional Options: The prosthetist explains the available options and helps people choose the type of prosthesis and the options they need to accomplish their goals. For example, women who want to be able to wear shoes with different heel heights may prefer a prosthetic ankle that can adjust to different heights. People who swim can get a second prosthetic leg that is designed for swimming and can withstand water, salt, and sand. Runners can get prosthetic feet specifically designed for running" (Schaffer, 2015). |
transfemoral amputation -- This is an amputation that is above the knee. This prosthetic device includes an artificial knee.
transtibial amputation -- This is an amputation below the knee. This prosthetic device does not need an artificial knee, the individual is able to still function with their own. (Schaffer, 2015).
transtibial amputation -- This is an amputation below the knee. This prosthetic device does not need an artificial knee, the individual is able to still function with their own. (Schaffer, 2015).
